are two types of marine education at

1.
High education:
"Odessa
State Marine Academy",which
has following faculties:
-
faculty of ship's navigators (deck officers);

faculty of ship's engineers (marine engineers);
-
electro-engineers faculty (electro-engineers);
-
radiotechnical faculty (radio-officers).
"Odessa
Technological Institute of Cold Industry",
which
teach reefer engineers of high class.
"Sevastopol
Institute of Instrument Making Industry"
with
the faculty of ship's engineers.
"Kiev
Academy of River Fleet"whose graduated
ship's deck officers, engineers, engineers-electricians, radio-engineers.
2.
Secondary education:
"Odessa
secondary marine school" prepares technicians-navigators.
"Kherson
secondary technical school" whose graduates
ship's radio officers, electricians, engineers-technicians and technicians-navigators.
An
entrant to the above-mentioned marine educational institutions should have
a general secondary education, pass medical examination and successfully
pass all the entrance examinations on order to start the study in them.
A term of study at the high educational institutes is 5 years (and 5.5
years for navigators only). At the secondary educational schools a term
of study is 3.5-4 years. All aforesaid educational institutions grant the
following initial diplomas allowing start to work on probation with the
further confirmation of professional skill in case of successful job. After
respective term of marine practice they can obtain enumerated below kinds
of maritime certificates:
- navigators
obtain diploma of Short Voyages Navigator;

engineers obtain diploma of Third Class Engineer;
-
electro-engineers obtain diploma of Third
Class Electro Engineers;
-
radio-engineers obtain diploma of Second Class
Radiotelegraph Operator.
All
these officers can obtain certificates of the next professional degree
after certain length of service and namely only in accordance with regulations
of Merchant Shipping Code of UKRAINE.

Deep Sea Navigator; - Deep Sea Captain.
Engineers

Second Class Engineer; - First Class Engineer.
Electro-engineers
- Second Class Electro Engineer;

First Class Electro Engineer.
Radio-Officers

seafarers have all necessary qualification certificates in conformity with
international standards and STCW 78/95.
